Latest Health: Suddenly ‘Cringe’ when Remembering Past Moments? Here’s the Psychological Explanation
Have you ever thought about an embarrassing moment at school one night when you were trying to sleep? This moment usually makes you shudder and makes you cringe yourself.
Apparently, this phenomenon is normal, you know. There is a scientific explanation behind this.
Quoted from Forbes, psychologists use the term ‘perseverative thinking’ to describe repetitive thought patterns that are difficult to control and continue to revolve around things that cause stress. This also includes reflecting on the past, for example ‘why did I say that?’, worrying about the future such as ‘what if I embarrass myself again?’, and repeated self-evaluation.
In a 2025 review published in Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience, neuroscientists explained this process arises from dysfunctional interactions between several psychological systems involved in self-regulation.
The study authors explain the human mind naturally spends a lot of time detached from current reality. Even while walking, showering, or sitting at work, we mentally revisit the past, imagine possible futures, replay conversations, or create completely fictional scenarios.
In many ways, this ability is psychologically useful because it helps a person plan the future, solve problems, and build a complete self-identity. However, problems arise when the mind begins to treat intrusive thoughts as unresolved threats that must be continuously monitored.
Perseverative thinking is triggered in part by what researchers call ‘discrepancy monitoring’ or the brain’s tendency to constantly compare reality with how something ‘should’ happen. This is what makes embarrassing memories feel so sticky, because the brain continues to mark them as unfinished business.
Social wrongs feel unresolved, so the mind keeps bringing them back to consciousness in an attempt to process or correct them retrospectively.
Ironically, this repetitive mental exercise actually strengthens these memories rather than resolving them. Researchers note that perseverative thinking can slowly change the way a person views themselves and the world around them.
If certain negative memories keep being ‘recalled’, they become increasingly accessible over time. As a result, social threats feel more frequent, more important, and more likely to cause rejection than they actually are.

PakarPBN
A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.
In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.
The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
