Latest News: Ecuadorian judge shot dead while on his way to the gym
Reported by AFP, Wednesday (13/5/2926) Ecuador’s judicial watchdog in a statement released Monday said the murder of Lady Pachar was a “serious attack on justice and the rule of law in Ecuador”.
Pachar was shot on Monday (11/5) while traveling by car to a gym in the southwestern city of Machala.
Two of his bodyguards were not with him when the incident occurred. This was revealed by police in Machala, which is the capital of El Oro province which borders Peru.
A police source told AFP on Tuesday that the judge had received threats and was killed in retaliation for the release of gang members.
About 70 percent of the drugs produced by Colombia and Peru, the world’s largest and second-largest cocaine producers, respectively, are shipped through Ecuador.
President Daniel Noboa, one of US leader Donald Trump’s strongest allies on the continent, has prioritized targeting cocaine traffickers since he came to power in 2023.
He has deployed the army on the streets and in prisons, launched dramatic raids on drug strongholds, and frequently declared states of emergency – actions harshly criticized by human rights groups.
However, despite his hardline policies, killings have increased, reaching a record 9,216 violent deaths last year. (lira/lira)

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
